Cette question m’a déjà été posée de nombreuses fois. Il est probable qu’on me la posera à l’avenir. C’est la raison pour laquelle je me permets un petit mot pour justifier mes raisons. Je trouve que cela n’est pas intéressant, mais cela évitera à l’avenir un courrier individuel.

Je suis généalogiste amateur depuis quarante ans. Dans ma jeunesse j’ai étudié la famille Goens et la famille Horemans.

Il se fait que je descends également des Pourbaix par la mère de ma grand-mère, puis sa mère, etc. Or, dans ma région, les Pourbaix sont connus pour avoir été les créateurs des charbonnages, au dix-septième siècle. J’ai donc continué mon hobby en étudiant cette famille. Vers 1980, j’ai commencé à publier. De tous les contacts que j’eus à cette époque, j’ai eu celui de Paul Pourbaix qui habitait encore Bruxelles et qui avait mon âge.

Or, il se fait que la mère de Paul Pourbaix est une Splingaerd !

Paul Pourbaix vouait à son arrière-grand-père une passion qu’il m’a transmise. Dès la première époque, nous avions envisagé une généalogie descendante mais ce travail lui paraissait difficile. Après une autre publication plus importante, en 1991, nous avions reparlé de cette question et il me promettait souvent de nouvelles conversations ou des documents. Mais il était souvent absent et il partit en Amérique et prit sa résidence à Paris.

Il y a cinq ans, j’ai commencé avec mon website. J’y présentais déjà Paul Splingaerd avec une petite généalogie tirée de la documentation disponible à l’époque. Tout à changé avec Internet et le e-mail.

J'ai pris ma retraite en aout 2006 et, disposant de plus de temps, j’ai ajouté sur mon website le mot-clé « Splingaerd », en pensant à Paul Pourbaix et en essayant de le joindre. J’ignorais qu’il était décédé peu de temps auparavant. Après quelques mois, j’ai obtenu des contacts et j’ai alors complété un travail qui existait depuis plus de vingt ans tout en assurant indirectement la liaison entre les cousins descendants, par hasard. Ce n’est pas terminé. Je vous remercie de votre collaboration.

I have been asked this question numerous times, and I will probably be asked again, so allow me to explain my interest. I have been an amateur genealogist for forty years. In my youth I studied the Goens and Horemans families.

I also happen to descend from the Pourbaix through my maternal grandmother. In my part of the country, the Pourbaix are known for having created the coalmines in the seventeenth century. I thus continued my hobby by studying this family. In about 1980, I started to publish. Among the contacts made as a result of my publications, was Paul Pourbaix who lived Brussels at that time, and happened to be my age.

Well, it turned out that Paul Pourbaix’s mother was a Splingaerd!
 Paul Pourbaix’s passionate interest in his great-grandfather rubbed off on me. We spoke of compiling a Splingaerd genealogy but this proved problematic to him. After another more important publication of mine, in 1991, we spoke again of this project, and he promised me new information or documents. Unfortunately he was often away, spent a good deal of time in America, then he moved to Paris.

Five years ago, I began my website. It included a section on Paul Splingaerd with a small genealogy drawn from documentation available at the time. Everything changed with the Internet and e-mail.

My retirement in August 2006 allowed more time for my hobby. I added the keyword "Splingaerd" to my site, believing that Paul Pourbaix would help me add to it. I was unaware at the time that he had just died.

A few months later, I made contact with people who have helped me supplement the work I had begun more than twenty years earlier. A fortuitous outcome of this project is that it has become instrumental in facilitating the connection between Splingaerd descendants around the world.

The site is by no means finished. Its development is ongoing, and I invite and encourage you to collaborate in the continued growth of this site by contributing family pictures, documents and information.
